War diaries have always been fascinating to read, because not only do they give a factual account of what happened, but also a personal one too.
This diary was written almost 100 years ago by my grandfather George Drury of the 3rd Norfolks, whose experiences took him to fight in Palestine in 1917. His daily account gives fresh insight to the life of an ordinary soldier of that time enduring travel, army discipline and shortages of rations under battle conditions, also highlighting the wonderful care afforded to the wounded in our hospitals. His educated background enabled him to have almost a photographic memory to transcribe later into his diary, the details of which would have caused him to be in great trouble had the diary been discovered.
We can only be grateful that diaries like these are available in this present day, to pay respect to all those who fought in the Great War.
Illustrated with 15 colour and 8 mono images.
